They’ll Call You Too Much—Be Even More

I was sipping my coffee this morning, scrolling through social media, when I saw yet another post telling women how to shrink themselves. "Be softer," "Don’t be too loud," "Tone it down." I nearly choked on my matcha. Why is it that society always seems to have something to say when women—especially Black women—decide to live out loud?

I’ve spent too much time trying to be palatable. Smiling when I didn’t feel like it. Lowering my voice so I wouldn’t seem "too much." Dressing in a way that didn’t raise eyebrows. And for what? So I could fit into some box that was never meant to hold me in the first place? Nah. I’m done with that.

Here’s the truth: the world doesn’t know what to do with women who refuse to shrink. Especially when those women are bold, creative, and unapologetically themselves. Society would rather see us muted—polished, predictable, and "appropriate." But here’s what I know for sure: your quirks, your wild ideas, your unfiltered self—that’s where your power lives.

Being "weird" is really just being free. Free to take up space. Free to laugh too loudly, to geek out over things you love, to mix prints that make people blink twice. Free to dance like you’re in a music video even if you’ve got two left feet. Free to talk passionately about your dreams without worrying if you sound "realistic."

People will try to make you feel like your weirdness is a flaw, but it’s not. It’s your magic. It’s what sets you apart in a world that’s obsessed with sameness. They’ll say you’re "too much," but that’s because they can’t handle someone who isn’t watering themselves down.

So stay weird, sis. Wear that bright lipstick. Post your random thoughts. Show up in your loud, authentic glory. The world may not know what to do with you, but that’s not your problem—it’s theirs. Keep being you. Loud, proud, and a little bit weird. That’s where your power is.
